I think this is one of those books where the idea is better than the execution. I found this one boring, uninspiring, and kind of confusing. I'm not impressed.

Cute book with an interesting concept. Sadly, as others have pointed out, there's no pronunciation guide, so even though the Chinese and Arabic phrases are transliterated into the Latin alphabet, that's not quite enough for those who don't speak the various languages to have any confidence they're saying the phrases correctly. Worse, the Chinese isn't actually correct - the text says "Wasnshang hao" instead of "Wanshang hao." (Note the extra "s" as the third letter.) The pictures are charming, and there are a reasonably wide range of countries and languages represented (though, sadly, no indigenous groups and the only example from sub-Saharan Africa is Afrikaans). The illustrations show a range of diverse babies in every country. Clever clues of flags and signage help make it clear which country is being represented even without explicit labels for countries or languages. Altogether, nice idea but the execution didn't quite live up to the concept. ...more
This book is for children younger than school ages. This book would be good for teachers to use as a fun way to get students started learning other languages because the first step is learning to say hello. The illustrations are very cartoony and the characters are all babies. The book is clearly written for native English speakers as it translates every greeting in english in parenthesis but not in a way that distracts from the other language. The english is smaller than the other language is to show that that is what is important for the reader to be paying attention to. There isn't a storyline or plot, this book is written for extremely young ages but can be used to pique older student's interest in other languages or as an introduction to new language units. I would probably have this book in my classroom for a fun book, not necessarily for the reading content. ...more

Babies Around the World by Puck and Violet Lemay. This is a multicultural book for infants and toddlers. This book talks about to say hello to international babies as you tour the world from morning to nighttime. The journey starts on a sunny day in New York City and ends on San Francisco night, with stops in other countries such as Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, London, and others. Cute illustrations. Fun way to introduce toddlers to other cultures/languages.Big points lost for using Afrikaans as the language to introduce in the Cape Town spread. Next time, maybe don't choose the language of the oppressor as the single example from a country with 11 national languages.

Sweet book celebrating babies all around the world. Illustrated. Includes text in various languages. but pronunciation help is not included. Board book nice for little hands, but too small for a large storytime setting unless enlarged.

Four stars from me, one star lost for lack of a pronunciation guide. 5 stars from the baby. It's his new favorite. He likes the Cairo baby best, with Paris a close second.

This is cute, but I wish they had listed somewhere what language each country featured speaks, rather than untethered examples.

As world citizens this book is perfect for my family. It really fosters a love of different languages and cultures.
I loved it! It showed me lots of cities around the world and new languages.

Cute concept. I just wished their maybe had been a glossary of how to pronounce some of the words. Pretty sure I butchered 95% of the words.
